ED. Tech. week 4- Flipping a classroom Neven style

A flipped classroom is a great way to change the rules and expectations of a standard classroom. I loved how the flipped classroom allows the students to learn at their own pace. So, with a flipped classroom the students would first learn on their own then apply and work on problems at school. Besides being able to learn at their own pace, students also benefit because they are easily able to contribute to the learning process in class. Even the teacher gets more face time with the flipped classroom because they are not in front of the entire class answering and directly talking to the students who open engage. Instead the teacher gets to come around to the groups who are already helping each other and give additional help to students who need help. Overall, I feel that the greatest benefit of a flipped classroom is that the teacher becomes a learning coach instead of a presenter which gives the students more time with the teacher aiding rather than just relaying information.

As discussed in the article about flipped classrooms when the teacher notices that groups of students don’t understand, the teacher can then cluster those students for a mini lecture while those who did understand continue to work without disruption or delay. This in my opinion is important to also keep students engaged. I notice quite frequently that when excelling students must re-hear the same information over and over then lose their focus or motivation to continue to engage. On the other hand, the students who continually misunderstand lose interest and motivation because they don’t want to keep seeing or hearing their fellow classmates remarks to not understanding time and time again.

I definitely, as a future educator, would run a flipped classroom depending on what we are learning. As I want to teach early elementary grade levels this would also impact the students’ ability to use technology and conduct research which is part of their core curriculum. I also would enjoy a flipped classroom because the parents of my students would also get back time with the children because their homework would be less time consuming and strenuous because they could be learning something new together.
