ED. Tech. week 4- Twitter, Tweet, reTweet
There is a Twitter and a tweet. I have very recently come
back to Twitter for this education technology course and I certainly have mixed
reviews. First, I really disliked having to be forced to have and consistently connect
to public social media. However, I do have to admit that there are many ways to
make Twitter a more personal and less invasive tool to connect with other
teachers. As I continue to scroll through my Twitter homepage, I am consistently
seeing positive ways to improve my school’s culture and atmosphere. There are
also great tools being shared for individual classrooms too. Eric Curtis, a
fellow Twitterer on my PLN, even shared a great website to get free education
games and activities for students.
Moreover, I did follow many of the recommended teachers and
education staff provided at first but through scrolling and “trolling” Twitter
I have found more educators to follow based on similar philosophies or contents
they are uploading to Twitter. I can say that through creating a PLN through
Twitter I can see how being apart of social media can benefit me as a teacher. I
have even taken time to reflect on many of the ideas that other educators have
brought up. For example, @edutopia posted a great video that brought up the
topic of recess being a right or privilege. This opens my eyes and lets me
process to never let the punishment be to lose recess because of the other negative
impacts the student suffers without a recess.
Finally, event though I started as a skeptic of Twitter I
have come to realize its benefits to me as a teacher. I don’t think that I will
continue to hold my Twitter account after this class but instead will continue
to work on my PLN through Pinterest. Essentially, I created a Pinterest account
which I use all the time. Now, however, I follow other teachers and school
staff to get ideas about teaching and ways to handle many different topics that
come up in a school setting. I am all for taking a negative experience and
turning it into a positive one.
