ED Tech. Week 3- Digital Review

Digital storytelling was a great topic to read about. As a future educator I can definitely relate to using story telling to get students to retain information. I aid in functional preschool, so, the best way to convey a meaningful message is to incorporate it into a story. For example, to teach our students colors we use the book Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See? The students use the visual picture along with the spoken story to memorize the colors of each animal.

Further, as a student myself, I often find that I do a much better job remembering a story rather that just being given a lecture to remember. The article, The Art of Digital Storytelling states that, storytelling is an experience that increases both the authors and listeners communication. I think that if more educators used their own personal stories of using the information being provided would better the students comprehension of the information. In theory it would be more comprehensible to put the information in real terms that can be visualized over many facts being pushed.
Additionally, I think that our class assignment to make a digital story is a terrific way to start memorizing our teaching standards. Even the beginning steps of the assignment, creating the concept map for the digital story, has me remembering the standards of the functions of reading in 1st grade. I am linking my personal journey as a reader to the idea of me becoming an educator who creates readers rather than students who can read.

Finally, in the article, Digital Storytelling Across the Curriculum, I learned that storytelling was no longer being used in only language arts. They discuss that there are four mediums in which a student can give a storytelling to get different comprehensions of the information for the students. These include myths, legends, or tall tales; docudramas; describe and conclude; and advertising or public service announcements. This discovery makes me very interested in learning from my fellow classmates’ digital storytelling, how other subjects can be turned into a story.
